Emily Post

Miguel Covarrubias

A Vertech scan

Miguel Covarrubias, along with Al Herschfeld (who worked right up to his death a few years ago) and Ralph Barton, was one of the great caricaturists who flourished in and around the 1930's. The portrait shown here is of Emily Post, the social arbiter of those times. We see her here with her tootsies on a table that also holds a picure of Queen Victoria, dangling a Police Gazette (a tabloid devoted to sex scandals and bloody crimes) from her delicate fingers. This was part of a deliciously evil series, "Private Lives of the Great", that Covarrubias did for Vanity Fair.
