Fabio Borbottoni

A Vertech scan

In 1864, Florence was made the capital of Italy. To prepare the city for its new eminence, buildings were torn down and streets were straightened -- putting a modern facade on what had been a medieval town. This did not please everyone. The beloved old buildings and crooked streets were mourned by many, among whom was Fabio Borbottoni. In about a hundred paintings, he tried to preserve the old ambiance of the "improved" city. This is one of the paintings.
